“부품이 마모되었습니다”는 보통 The component is worn.이라고 쓸 수 있지만, 기술 보고 문장으로는 정보가 부족합니다. 표면이 긁힌 것인지, 재료가 박리된 것인지, 부식 구멍이 생긴 것인지에 따라 영어 표현과 조사할 원인이 달라집니다. 가장 안전한 방식은 손상 이름 하나로 결론내리지 않고 관찰한 형상, 위치, 범위, 기준 판정을 차례로 적는 것입니다.
worn이 틀리지는 않지만 충분하지 않은 이유
wear는 접촉과 운동 때문에 표면 재료가 점차 제거되거나 형상이 변하는 넓은 개념입니다. 그래서 The seal is worn.은 대화에서는 통하지만, 본사 엔지니어는 다시 묻게 됩니다. 어느 면이 얼마나 닳았는지, 누설과 관계가 있는지, 사용 한계를 넘었는지 알 수 없기 때문입니다.
다음 두 문장을 비교해 보면 차이가 분명합니다.
The shaft is worn.
A continuous wear band is visible on the shaft at the seal contact area. The maximum measured groove depth is 0.08 mm. Please confirm whether this exceeds the allowable limit for model XX.
두 번째 문장은 원인을 섣불리 확정하지 않으면서도 위치, 형상, 측정값과 필요한 답변을 제공합니다. 단, 숫자와 모델명은 실제 측정 및 적용 문서가 있을 때만 넣어야 합니다.
손상 보고는 다섯 칸으로 나누면 쉽다
영어 실력보다 정보 배열이 중요합니다. 다음 순서를 고정해 두면 대부분의 부품 사진과 검사 결과를 명확하게 설명할 수 있습니다.
- Object: 어떤 부품인가
- Location: 어느 면·방향·구역인가
- Appearance: 무엇이 보이는가
- Extent: 길이·깊이·면적·개수·측정값은 얼마인가
- Assessment: 기준 초과 여부와 아직 확인할 사항은 무엇인가
기본 문장 틀은 다음과 같습니다.
The [part] shows [observed condition] on/at [location]. The affected area measures approximately [extent]. This [exceeds / remains within / has not yet been compared with] the limit specified in [document].
원인 추정은 별도 문장으로 떼어 냅니다.
The pattern is consistent with [possible mechanism], but contamination and alignment have not yet been ruled out.
consistent with는 그 원인과 모순되지 않는다는 뜻이지 원인이 확정됐다는 뜻이 아닙니다.
마모와 긁힘을 구분하는 표현
shows signs of wear — 마모 흔적이 보인다
정도와 사용 가능 여부를 아직 판단하지 않았을 때 쓰기 좋습니다.
The bushing shows signs of wear on the load side.
worn out은 “완전히 닳아 더는 쓸 수 없다”는 뉘앙스가 강합니다. 공식 보고서에서는 제조사 한계와 측정 결과가 있을 때 is worn beyond the service limit가 더 정확합니다.
The bushing is worn beyond the service limit specified in Section 4.2 of the maintenance manual.
abraded / abrasive wear — 입자나 거친 면에 의한 연마성 마모
단단한 입자가 표면을 긁으며 재료를 제거한 외관과 정합할 때 씁니다. 원인을 확정하지 못했다면 appears abraded 또는 is consistent with abrasive wear로 제한합니다.
Fine parallel marks are visible in the sliding direction. The surface condition is consistent with abrasive wear.
scratched, scored, grooved — 긁힘의 정도와 형상
scratched: 비교적 일반적인 표면 긁힘scored: 하중을 받은 접촉에서 생긴 뚜렷한 선형 손상이나 홈grooved: 연속된 홈이 형성됐다는 형상 중심 표현
Three axial score marks are visible on the rod surface near the wiper seal.
severely scored처럼 주관적인 강도를 쓰기보다 깊이, 길이와 개수를 적는 편이 낫습니다. 측정할 수 없으면 사진 번호와 위치 기준을 붙입니다.
A circumferential groove is visible at the seal contact line; depth has not yet been measured.
들러붙고 번진 표면의 표현
scuffed, smeared, galled — 접착성 마모 계열
SKF가 설명하는 ISO 15243 분류에서는 adhesive wear가 smearing이나 galling으로도 표현됩니다. 서로 미끄러지는 금속 표면에서 재료가 이행되고 마찰열이 생길 때 나타날 수 있습니다.
scuffed: 문질러져 광택·거칠기가 불균일하게 변한 비교적 넓은 표현smeared: 표면 재료가 미끄럼 방향으로 번지거나 끌린 외관galled: 심한 접착과 재료 이행, 뜯김이 동반된 손상

사진만으로 윤활 부족을 바로 확정하지는 않습니다. 너무 가벼운 하중에서 구름 요소가 미끄러지거나, 틈새·속도·윤활 조건이 맞지 않아도 유사한 접착성 마모가 생길 수 있습니다.
작은 구멍과 표면 박리는 같은 말이 아니다
pitted / pitting — 작은 공동이 생겼다
pitting은 표면에 작은 구멍이나 패임이 다수 생긴 외관을 가리킵니다. 그러나 부식 피팅과 접촉 피로 피팅의 메커니즘은 다릅니다. 따라서 처음에는 위치와 분포를 먼저 적습니다.
Multiple pits are visible on the tooth flank, concentrated near the pitch line.
Localized pitting corrosion is visible beneath the damaged coating.
기어, 베어링, 도금면에서 허용 기준과 용어가 다를 수 있으므로 해당 부품의 검사 매뉴얼을 우선합니다.
spalled, flaked, chipped — 조각이 떨어져 나갔다
spalled: 접촉 피로나 응력으로 표면 일부가 박리된 상태에 자주 사용flaked: 얇은 층이나 코팅이 비늘처럼 벗겨진 외관chipped: 모서리나 국부에서 작은 조각이 깨져 나간 상태
A spalled area is present on the inner raceway at approximately the 3 o’clock position.
The coating is flaking around the fastener hole.
One tooth corner is chipped; no crack indication was found in the adjacent area during the specified inspection.
마지막 예문의 no crack indication was found는 실제 지정 검사에서 그런 결과를 얻었을 때만 쓸 수 있습니다. 육안 사진만 보고 There is no crack.이라고 단정하지 않습니다.
미세 움직임과 부식의 표현
fretted / fretting corrosion — 접촉면의 미세 상대운동 흔적
끼워맞춤 면이나 볼트 접촉부에서 작은 반복 운동이 생기면 마모 분말과 적갈색·검은 산화 흔적이 나타날 수 있습니다. SKF의 ISO 15243 설명은 베어링 링과 축·하우징 사이의 미세운동을 대표 사례로 듭니다.
Reddish-brown debris and fretting marks are visible on the shaft-to-inner-ring contact surface.
단순히 색이 붉다고 rust 또는 fretting으로 확정하지 않습니다. 재료, 습기, 접촉 위치와 맞물리는 상대 부품을 함께 확인합니다.
corroded, rusted, oxidized — 부식·녹·산화
corroded는 금속이 환경과 반응해 열화된 넓은 표현입니다. rusted는 보통 철계 재료의 녹에 쓰며, 알루미늄 산화물이나 다른 금속의 부식을 모두 rust라고 하면 부정확합니다. oxidized는 산화됐다는 화학적 표현이므로 분석 근거가 없다면 외관 묘사를 먼저 둡니다.
Localized corrosion is visible around the drain hole.
White corrosion products are present on the aluminum housing surface.
균열, 파단과 변형 표현
cracked와 fractured
cracked는 균열이 생긴 상태, fractured는 부품이 부분 또는 완전히 파단된 상태에 적합합니다. broken은 일상적으로 넓게 쓸 수 있지만 기술 보고에서는 파단 위치와 형태를 더 구체화하는 편이 좋습니다.
A circumferential crack indication was detected at the fillet.
The retaining ring fractured at the gap.
비파괴검사 결과라면 crack indication과 사용한 검사법을 적고, 그것만으로 균열의 깊이나 원인을 과장하지 않습니다.
bent, dented, deformed, plastically deformed
bent: 축·봉처럼 원래 직선인 부품이 굽음dented: 충격 등으로 국부적으로 움푹 들어감deformed: 형상이 변한 넓은 표현plastically deformed: 하중 제거 후에도 남는 영구변형임을 근거로 말할 때
The guard is bent inward and is contacting the coupling.
Two dents are visible on the tube outer surface.
The cage pocket appears deformed; dimensional inspection is required.
관찰, 원인, 사용 판정을 한 문장에 섞지 않는다
다음 문장은 흔하지만 위험합니다.
The bearing was damaged due to poor lubrication and must be replaced.
사진 몇 장만 본 단계라면 관찰, 원인과 처분이 모두 단정돼 있습니다. 다음처럼 나누면 훨씬 정확합니다.
Spalling and dark discoloration are visible on the raceway. The pattern may be associated with inadequate film thickness, but lubricant condition, contamination, fit, and load have not yet been verified. The bearing should be evaluated against the manufacturer’s rejection criteria before disposition.
교체가 안전상 이미 요구되는 상황이라면 그것도 근거를 적습니다.
The crack indication exceeds the rejection criterion in Manual XX, Section Y. Remove the component from service and follow the approved replacement procedure.
사진 캡션도 진단 자료가 되게 만든다
Damaged part라는 캡션 대신 다음 정보를 넣습니다.
- 부품명과 설비 내 위치
- 보는 방향과 기준점
- 손상 위치를 표시한 화살표 또는 번호
- 크기 기준과 실제 측정값
- 촬영 전 세척 여부
- 사진 번호와 촬영 시각
예를 들면 다음과 같습니다.

바로 써먹는 문장 네 가지
The component shows signs of wear, but serviceability has not yet been determined.

The measured clearance exceeds the model-specific service limit stated in the maintenance manual.
No conclusion on root cause can be made from the photograph alone.
좋은 손상 영어는 어려운 단어를 많이 쓰는 문장이 아닙니다. 보이는 것, 잰 것, 기준으로 판정한 것과 아직 모르는 것을 서로 섞지 않는 문장입니다.
